NEW: Woven Samples!
The instructions for these images are exactly as before (see below). The only difference is that now the images are of woven samples rather than digital drawdowns.
With respect to color vs. black and white, please print these images the same way that you did the Blooming Leaf drawdowns in the earlier exercise. That will ensure that color influences your opinions the same way this time as it did the last time.
Here’s the file:
NB: This file is 37.7MB, so it may take a long time to download, but you might not even HAVE to download it: if you click on the filename it should open in a new browser window that will let you print.
Instructions
Each pdf is four pages. Each page has four pictures, and each picture is numbered from 1-16.
The goal is to arrange the drawdowns in order by how much they appeal to you.
Don’t worry about arranging all 16 in individual order. If you can and want to, that’s fine, but it’s also fine to group them: “This one is my favourite. After it, I like these three best, then those four, then all of these, and this one is my least favourite.”
I don’t want the order they’re printed in or numbered to influence you, so please transfer the number to the back of the page and make sure it’s not visible on the front while you’re sorting, as described below.
Do not consider float lengths in your evaluations! (The drawdowns do not include tabby. There aren’t any warp floats in the actual fabric.)
Some of the files are fairly large and might take a while to download.
Please follow these steps:
- Download the file. Some are big and take a while to download.
- Print the document in landscape orientation.
- Transfer the numbers above or below each drawdown to the back of the same drawdown, then scribble out the numbers on the front of the page or cut them off – the goal is that the numbers not be visible while you’re sorting.
- Cut the pages in half in both directions so that you have 16 separate pieces of paper with one drawdown each.
- Sort the drawdowns in order by how much you like them, how much they appeal to you, which you like best or least, etc.
- Email me your ordered list of drawdowns by number. Be sure to indicate which threading you’ve done and whether the list is ordered from best (favourite, most appealing, etc) to worst (least favourite, least appealing, etc) or vice versa.
For instance:
- No: 4, 12, 2, 6, 7, 16
- These are OK: 1, 5, 9, 11, 13
- These are a bit better: 14, 15
- Yes, I like these best: 3, 4, 10
If you include notes as to how you made your choices, that’d be great, but the list itself is the most important thing so if your time or interest is limited just send that.
If time allows, I may also be in touch re: discussing your responses in person, by Zoom, or by phone if you’re willing. Again, the list is the important thing, so please do that part of the exercise and don’t worry that sending me the list commits you to anything further.
I realize that not everyone is as nerdy as me and that you may not have the time, interest, or attention span to do very many threadings! If you’re going to do one and only one, please do the first Blooming Leaf. If you have time and patience for a few more, choose from the High Priority list. If you really enjoy this exercise, I’d love to have lists for all of the threadings below, and I can send you others as well!
Special case: The opposites threading below is a special case and really needs more exposition so you know what you’re looking at. If you want to sort it without that, great, but it might be best to Zoom so I can explain what it’s about.
